[BACK TO TILOS]

Tilos

CULTURE

Tilos is 63 square kilometers in area and lies between the islands of Nisiros, Sami and Chalki, 22 nautical miles north west of Rhodes. Two miles away from the island is the small island of Antitilos.

This beautiful island in the Dodecanese was the birthplace of the poetess Irina, whose history dates from the ancient period of the Aegean. With crystal clear seas, green fields and impressive mountains, ancient and Byzantine monuments, traditional architecture and a living tradition, Tilos constitutes a paradise for ideal vacations. Ideal for walks. Tilos has seven castles worth visiting.

Megalo Chorio is the capital of Tilos since the ancient times, built within the fortress and round it on the slopes of the mountain. The church of Archangel Michael was built then just outside the Hellenistic walls.

Like all unexploited islands of the Aegean, one finds peace, beauty and serenity. One meets warm, friendly and hospitable people, and although tourists have discovered the island in recent years, it remains unspoiled, natural and quiet, and the sea is clear and inviting. There is a good bus service and well-paved roads. Inside and round Megalo Chorio there are numerous little 15th century churches with fine fresco-Paintings.

Agios Antonios is a small port on the north east part of the gulf, with a few houses, a restaurant and a hotel. The most unusual thing to see is the "beach Rocks" on the coast with human skeletons dating from the 5th century B.C.

2 Kms. from Plaka, one can get to a beautiful beach and the Plaka estate, which belonged to the monastery of St. Panteleimon. A road along the edge of a precipice leads to a fantastic scenery almost at the top of the mountain. Sunset is a sensational sight from up there.

All the year round Tilos is connected by ferryboat to all the islands of the Dodecanese. The island's port now has 120 inhabitants and in recent years there has been tourist development here with hotels and tavernsand other night life. The port is a must-see attraction.
