TO SKOPELOS]
Skopelos
Skopelos
is a small paradise in the heart of Greece. An Aegean island, east
of Pelion and north of Evia. It is long and narrow, 17 km long and
maximum width 8km, with an extent 95.8 sq. km., a coastal perimeter
of 67 km. Its population is approximately 5.700. It is the second
largest island of the Northern Sporades (after Skyros) and it is
full of olive and pine trees.
The
habitants of Skopelos have a skillful hand at pottery, needlework,
woodcarving, and shipbuilding. They used to have a big ship yard,
which in 1821, produced 35 naval ships for the Greek Revolution. The
knives of Skopelos are very famous, too. Their blades are filled
with popular rhymes.
Though only a small island, Skopelos has about 360 churches,
chapels, monasteries and convents, of which the town alone has 123.
The 12 white-washed convents, which dot the gentle hillsides date
from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of them contain real works of
art, hand carved altar screens, frescoes and icons. The church of
Zoodohos Pigi is reputed to contain a miraculous icon painted by St.
Luke the Evangelist, which is worth a visit.
