TO PYRGOS]
Pyrgos
The Prefecture of Ilia is one of the 52 Prefectures of Greece,
located at the western side of Peloponnese. The city of Pyrgos is
the capital of this Prefecture.
80% of the Prefecture’s area is plain, and has mountains only on its
north-eastern side. The green flat part of the prefecture of Ilia is
the largest valley of Peloponnese and the third largest in Greece.
The land is fertile, due to good irrigation by the waters of the
Alfeios and the Pineios rivers, with large sandy beaches and many
lagoons at the mouths of its rivers.
One can visit its endless beaches, evergreen mountains, traditional
villages, Byzantine castles and monasteries. An outing to Olympia is
recommended, as it is only a few kilometers away.
An important role to its growth, played the production and commerce
of raisin.
