TO PREVEZA]
Preveza
Preveza
is in the south of Epirus, at the entrance of the Amvrakikos gulf.
Opposite and very close to Aktion, and a short distance from ancient
Nikopolis. The settlement was founded in the mid-11th. century. Its
current name first appears at the end of the l3th. century in the
Chronicle of the Morea.
Ali Pasha built his summer palace in Preveza in the spot called
Paliosaraga, near the hot springs. However, his main contribution
was the construction of the Dapia, or moat which encircled the land
part of the city and which protected its people and commerce. The
city of Preveza is built in the Amvrakikos gulf, which, together
with the double delta of the rivers Louros and Arahthos and a system
of lagoons, is a rare ecosystem protected by the RAMSAR
international treaty.
One of Europe's last remaining colonies of silver pelicans survives
in the Tsoukalio lagoon An enchanting lonian city at the entrance of
the Amvrakikos gulf, with a Mediterranean climate, several
attractions, cosmopolitan life and entertainment, as well as natural
surroundings that both excite and relax the visitor.
The
narrow alleys, neoclassical houses, belfries (Ayios Athanasios and
Profitis Elias), remains of the Turkish and Venetian presence in
Preveza, give the feeling that time stopped. One can enjoy the
endless lacework of beaches of Preveza, which combines the verdant
hillsides and the sea's several shades of blue to intoxicate
visitors. A host of hotels and rooms to rent spanning the entire
range as well as nightclubs, restaurants, and bars, provide abundant
choice, good service, and a comfortable stay. One can also find
savor genuine Greek and local delicacies, made with real pride.
Dozens of small taverns line the narrow streets, desiring to give a
good time.
Preveza is fortunate to be surrounded by two very different seas. At
the west the lonian is open and to the east the Amvrakikos is
closed. Winds in the summer are steady, and moderate in both seas,
making Preveza an ideal spot for windsurfing and sailing, as one can
learn in the safe gulf, and then venture out into the open lonian
sea.
Additionally, Preveza is a good base for excursions to the rest of
northwestern Greece.
