Naoussa

HISTORY

Neolithic settlements, royal tombs with frescoed walls, gold caskets and gold wreaths and crowns, waterfalls, rivers, high mountains, verdant villages and endless plains are some of the things Imathia has to offer (Imathia is the district which Naoussa belongs).
Around the year 2.300 BC, new groups of people appeared in Macedonia. And the fate of the Greeks can be discerned in their traces. Little by little they learned to use bronze and iron. Iron weapons, bronze jewellery, decorative objects found in the funeral mounds at Vergina, indicate the level of civilization that those people had reached. This is how the "Macedonia Nation" began.

Hellanikos, who lived at the time of Herodotos, considered Macedon son of Aeolos. Apollodoros considered Macedon son of Lykaon and thus grandson of the king of Argos Pelasgos and Lykaon king of the Arcadians, whose 50 sons became leaders of various Greek tribes. On the other hand Aelianos considered Lykaon, King of (Emathia - Naoussa) and Pindos, son of Macedon.

The first Hellenic tribes of Dorians and Achaeoi resided in Macedonia in prehistoric times, first in Emathia - Naoussa near Mount Vermion and later expanded northwards and eastwards to cover the lands Herodotos, where it is mentioned that around the 9th Century BC the Macedonian State had the city of Aegae as its capital and that either Caranos or Perdikkas was considered the founder of the Macedonian dynasty.

The history of wine in this region could start with Semeli, the mother of Dionysus, which according to the myth lived there, at the slopes of Mount Vermion. It is also here, that the magnificent dancer Silinos, the faithful companion of the God of vineyard and wine, was born. The Naoussa vineyard, sun drenched and protected from the northern winds, is located on these slopes. Thus, the finest red grape variety of the northern region of Greece, Xinomavro, is cultivated and the deep, richly colored NAOUSSA wine is produced (Appellation of Origin). The production of the red Vin de Pays d’ Imathia, from Xinomavro together with many other red grape varieties cultivated in the region, was recently legislated.

Revolution broke out against the Turks & the Ottomans in February 1822, when, along with the inhabitants of the city of Naoussa it was declared that city was freed (of Ottoman rule). The Turks deployed troops brought to Greece from Asia Minor, and by April the revolt was subdued. Naoussa was destroyed, the men were killed, and the women and children were taken as slaves.
