[BACK
TO MESSOLONGI]
Messolongi
The
capital Messolongi, wrote a heroic page in recent Greek history when
fighters in the besieged city broke out of it during the Greek War
of Independence (1821-1830). The heroic exodus of the "Free
Besieged" was also a bright spot in modern Greek history, and source
of inspiration for poets such as Solomos and Byron, and other great
artists.
The city was founded in the 16th century on three islets at the
mouth of the Aheloos and Evinos rivers, which were later united by
the silting of the rivers, to form three scenic lagoons. On entering
the city, one can view “The gate of Exodus” and the "Garden of the
Heroes". In the central square, the Town Hall houses the picture
gallery. Great historical value, have Ancient Kalidon, Ancient
Pleuron, "The castle of Kira Rhini", as the locals call it, and the
Windmill. The monastery of the Prophet llias (15th c.), near the
village, bears the name of Karaiskakis, where the illustrious
Revolutionary had his headquarters.
