TO LOUTRAKI]
Loutraki
Loutraki
is considered as the most ancient bathing resort of Greece. It was
known as "Thermai" during ancient times, (Thermia Artemida was the
protector God of the therapeutic natural mineral water) considered
to be a therapeutic and tourist town. It was subsequently
distinguished as the metropolitan center of Greece tourism, and of
course, as a principal therapeutic spot. It was the beloved city of
the Gods, so that Apollo (the God of the sun and psychic
tranquility) and Hera (the mother of Gods) had temples for their
adoration. Loutraki was born together with God Hygeia (Health) and
raised in the hands of Xenius (hospitable) Jove.
A significant ancient civilization was developed in the region of
Loutraki (the ancient site of Peraia, today's area of Perachora),
because of its advantageous geographical location. An Aqueduct - a
huge construction - was made in Perachora, in 300 B.C. During
Pre-Roman years, Loutraki was a vital part of Korinthos. During the
Byzantine era, churches were built around the therapeutic waters.
In the Byzantine years, the erection of a church near the hot
springs indicates that the mineral waters were able to ease much
suffering. In 1855, the first municipal enterprise to utilize the
springs opened, providing organised facilities for those who
traveled to Loutraki "to take the waters". Loutraki was
characterized as a spa, in 1925.
The
Municipality of Loutraki-Perachora, along with other smaller
settlements - Blue lake, Hereon, Pissia, Shcinos, Skaloma, Strava,
Milokopi, Sterna, and Isthmus, was established in 1934. Since 1936
Loutraki has been a station for hot baths, winning the honor of the
first center for Lithiasis in Greece and in the Eastern
Mediterranean. In the past few decades the waters of Loutraki have
attracted the interest of medical circles, being considered
comparable to the famous waters of Vichy, Evian and Perrier, and
they have been the subject of many scientific and medical studies.
Today, Loutraki with three ultramodern hydrotherapy installations,
fully equipped for treatment using baths, drinking and
physiotherapy, as well as impeccable facilities for tourists, fully
merits its ranking among the finest organized health resorts
internationally.
