It is 164 km east of Thessaloniki, and covers an area of 2111 km2, bordered to the south by the sea. The land is mainly mountainous, with its highest peak - Mount Pangheon (1956 m), where skiing is possible. It has two fertile valleys, that of Philipi and of Hrisoupoli and a river, the Nestos, that constitutes its eastern border.

Its principal agricultural products are tobacco, cereals, vegetables, grapes and tobacco. Also important are meat and fish products. Its industries process fertilizers, petroleum and various kinds of marble, among them the famous white marble of Kavala.

The Prefecture of Kavala is a well-known tourist site. With its beautiful coast and its usually calm sea, the pleasant city of Kavala offers enjoyable vacations. Philipi, one of the most interesting archaeological sites of Greece, Eicosifinizza, the most ancient monastery of the Balkan Peninsula and other places of the region with important remains make this prefecture a very interesting site for visitors. Also, the nearby island of Thassos is a wonderful place for excursions.

Kavala, one of the most important cities of Greece, is situated in Northern Greece,. It is a beautiful town that, thanks to its pleasant climate, its fine beaches and its modern hotels, attracts a large current of tourists and is an ideal place for vacations.

Built in amphitheatrically shape on hills, the city of Kavala extends its modern buildings to the sea. Kavala has beautiful large and sandy beaches. Its port receives commercial and tourist ships, as well as a fleet of picturesque fishing boats.

The only part of the city where nothing has changed is the old district of Panaghia. Here the castle and the old houses reflect the various periods of Kavala’s history.

A very important source of income is from its tourist industry, with very satisfying accommodations.

By air : The airport (27 km from Kavala) is connected with Athens by regularly scheduled flights and with a number of Western European cities by charters.

By Boat : Kavala is linked by boat with Thassos, Limnos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Rhodes, Kymi, Agios Konstantinos, Piraeus, Mytilini and Samothrace.

By Bus : Kavala can be reached by bus from Athens, Thessaloniki, Drama, Serres, Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupolis. Komotini and Alexandroupolis are also served by long - distance buses.
