[BACK
TO IKARIA]
Ikaria
Ikaria
was named after Ikaros, the son of Daidalos. It is known from
mythology, of the flying escape of the famous craftsman Daidalos and
his young son Ikarus, from Crete, where they were captives of King
Minoas. According to the myth, they secretively flew from Crete with
Athens as their destination. When they arrived on top of Icarias
mount Athera young Ikarus’ enthusiasm of the beautiful sight he
faced, made him neglect his father’s commands and flew too close to
the sun. As a result, the high temperature melted away his wings,
and he fell into the sea and drowned. The very sorrowful father took
his son's corpse and buried it on the island and therefore the sea
was named Ikarian Sea and the island Ikaria. In ancient times, the
island was called Makris or Dolichi as well as Ichthiessa or
Ichthioussa.
