TO AMORGOS]
Amorgos

Amorgos is the most easterly island of the Cyclades and the nearest
to Dodecanese. It has two ports: attractive Katapola and Ormos
Aiyalis with its marvelous beach. Amorgos has an area of 121 sq.
km., a shoreline of 112 km. and a population of 1,800. It can be
reached by ferry from Piraeus (a distance of 138 nautical miles),
Rafina, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. In summer there are also
Hydrofoil Boats (flying dolphins) from Rafina. The local buses
provide transport on the island.
Amorgos is an island of a particular natural beauty. It is a
seductive island that will lead you to the path of romanticism,
sensuality and happiness. An island so unique that it creates the
sense that you are in a different civilization, awakening every
happy memory and every sweet and tender emotion inside you.
Amorgos is visited by a large number of tourists which come to the
island to enjoy the unspoiled natural environment, the crystal
waters of the sea, the rough beauty of the landscape. In spite of
the fact that the island's tourist facilities are still in their
infancy, its hotels and rental-rooms are capable of catering to
large numbers of visitors.
Hora
is the capital of the island and it is built in the interior of the
island. It is filled with paved streets, arches, alleys and rocky
steps. When you are in Hora we suggest that you visit the Venetian
castle, the medieval Tower of Gavras, which today houses the
archaeological museum, the monastery of Hozoviotissas and the old
mansions.
At Katapola, the main harbour of the island today, and the location
of the interesting church of “Our Lady 'Katapoliani'” (built on the
site of a temple of Apollo), traces of ancient Minoa have come to
light.
The island's second port, the picturesque village of Egiali (which
actually consists of three little hamlets of spotless white
island-style houses) is renowned for its fantastic sandy beaches. It
is in fact easier to approach the village of Arkessini, built near
the site of the ancient town with the same name.
The white-washed houses of the island's capital, Hora or Amorgos,
are built around the Venetian Kastro perched on the top of the hill.
The typical Cycladic ecclesiastical style of architecture, with
double or "twin" churches. On a rocky promontory to the north-east
of the Hora is the Byzantine monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, one
of the most important monuments of its kind.
The island has to offer a lot of things to the visitor who wants to
escape far away from the noisy heavy developed tourist destinations.
Amorgos keeps well its secrets in order to gift them to anyone who
pays a visit here! Don't hesitate to visit Amorgos! A different
world, plenty of beauty is awaiting you.
